Dripping Springs Named the First International Dark Sky Community in Texas

Those lucky enough to have grown up in Texas, thrilling to a brilliantly clear night sky, know the opening lines to "Deep in the Heart of Texas":  

The stars at night are big and bright

Deep in the heart of Texas.

The prairie sky is wide and high

Deep in the heart of Texas

Today, a lot of people living here in the heart of Texas are remembering what that song really means. In rapidly disappearing rural Texas, the stars are not quite as bright as they once were, but some dedicated Texans are working very hard to make sure future Lone Star generations will still be able to sing about them. 

Citizens Alliance for Responsible Development congratulates the Hays County city of Dripping Springs for earning a rare and wonderful honor, the first Texas town to be named an International Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association. 

CARD supports efforts to promote Dark Sky programs and lighting throughout the Hill Country. It would be great to see Wimberley and Woodcreek aim for such a lofty goal.

This is an inspirational award and honor. Residents of the Wimberley Valley area also benefit from Dripping Springs' efforts by seeing a darker sky when we look north at night.
